He played for hours at the park with his kids
Watched them while they ate ham & cheese sandwiches beneath a leafless tree
While time stood still, he cracked open the plastic lids
Telling each of one “Here’s to you and me.”
He smiled at them all, one after the other
They smiled back, enjoying the one another’s company
When the sandwiches were done, he dug deep and pulled out a few sugar-filled buns
What more could their father do beneath the days wild sun?
